Kader Khan (born October 22, 1937 – died December 31, 2018) was a very talented Indian actor, screenwriter, and film director. He appeared in over 300 Bollywood movies. Bollywood is the name for the Hindi-language film industry in India.
Kader Khan started his acting career in 1973 with the film Daag. In this movie, he played a prosecuting lawyer. Besides acting, he was also a very busy screenwriter in Hindi cinema from the late 1970s to the 1990s. He wrote dialogues for 200 films. Before joining the film industry, Khan was a professor of civil engineering at a college in Mumbai.

Early Life and Education
Kader Khan was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, on October 22, 1937. His family later moved to Mumbai, India, where he grew up. He went to a local school and then to Ismail Yusuf College. He earned a degree in Civil engineering.
From 1970 to 1975, he taught civil engineering at a college in Mumbai. While he was teaching, he also performed in plays. During one play called Taash Ke Patey, a famous actor named Dilip Kumar saw him perform. Dilip Kumar was so impressed that he offered Khan roles in his upcoming films, Sagina and Bairaag. This was how Kader Khan's film career began. He also started writing plays for theaters. Soon, he was asked to help write the script for the film Jawani Diwani. This marked the start of his career as a scriptwriter.
Career in Films
Actor
Kader Khan acted in more than 300 films in Hindi and Urdu languages. He also wrote dialogues for over 250 Indian films. These films were made from the 1970s until the early 2000s. A famous actor named Rajesh Khanna was so impressed with Khan's writing that he paid him a very high amount to write dialogues for the film Roti (1974).
Khan often worked with many big stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, Govinda, and Anil Kapoor. He also frequently appeared alongside other comedians such as Asrani and Shakti Kapoor. He played many different kinds of roles. These included funny characters, action heroes, romantic leads, and roles in family or social films.
His first film was Daag, where he played a supporting role as a lawyer. After 1984, he started getting longer and more important supporting roles in films like Masterji and Loha. From 1988 onwards, some films were even written with him in the main lead role, such as Jaisi Karni Waisi Bharnii and Baap Numbri Beta Dus Numbri.
Kader Khan became very well known for his comedy roles. He started doing main comedy parts from 1989. Some of his popular comedy films include Himmatwala, Aankhen, Coolie No. 1, and Dulhe Raja. He also had his own comedy TV show called Hasna Mat (meaning Don't laugh) in 2001.
Screenwriter
Kader Khan was a highly sought-after screenwriter. Rajesh Khanna gave him his first big break as a dialogue writer for the film Roti. After that, Khan wrote dialogues for many successful films starring Rajesh Khanna, like Maha Chor and Naya Kadam.
He also worked with famous directors like Manmohan Desai and Prakash Mehra. He wrote dialogues for many of Amitabh Bachchan's popular films, including Mr. Natwarlal, Coolie, and Amar Akbar Anthony. His dialogues for Agneepath were so good that Amitabh Bachchan won a National Film Award for his performance.
Filmmakers from South India also wanted Kader Khan to write scripts and dialogues for the Hindi versions of their films. He was known for not just translating the original films but also changing them to fit the culture and language of North India. Some of these films include Himmatwala (1983) and Justice Chaudhury (1983).
He wrote dialogues for many other successful films throughout the 1980s and 1990s, such as Meri Aawaz Suno, Coolie No. 1, and Main Khiladi Tu Anari.
Personal Life
Kader Khan lived in Mumbai, India, for many years. Later in his life, he moved to Toronto, Canada, for health reasons. He had three sons, including Sarfaraz Khan, who also became an actor. Kader Khan became a citizen of Canada. In 2014, he visited Mecca to perform Hajj, which is a religious pilgrimage.
Death
Kader Khan had a health condition called supranuclear palsy, which is a serious degenerative disease. He was admitted to a hospital in Canada on December 28, 2018, because he had trouble breathing. He was staying with his son and daughter-in-law there to get treatment. On December 31, 2018, his son, Sarfaraz Khan, announced that Kader Khan had passed away. His funeral was held at a mosque in Mississauga, Canada, and he was buried in Brampton's Meadowvale Cemetery.
Awards and Nominations
Kader Khan received several awards for his amazing work in the film industry.
- In 2013, he received the Sahitya Shiromani Award for his contributions to Hindi films.
- The AFMI (American Federation of Muslims from India) honored him twice for his achievements and service.
- On January 26, 2019, the Government of India announced that he would be given the Padma Shri award after his death. This is one of India's highest civilian honors.
