Nirupa Roy (born Kokila Kishorechandra Bulsara; 4 January 1931 – 13 October 2004) was a famous Indian actress. She starred in many Hindi films. People knew her for playing sad and emotional roles very well. She was even called the "Queen of Misery" because she was so good at showing sorrow.
Nirupa Roy acted from 1946 to 1999. She was especially famous for playing motherly roles in movies. She appeared in over 250 films. During her career, she won three Filmfare Awards. In 2004, she also received a special Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award.

Early Life and Beginnings
Nirupa Roy was born as Kokila Kishorechandra Bulsara. Her birthplace was Kalwada, in Valsad, Gujarat. When she was 15 years old, she married Kamal Roy. After getting married, she moved to the city of Mumbai. When she started acting, she began using her married name, Nirupa Roy.
A Career in Acting
In 1946, Nirupa Roy and her husband saw an advertisement. It was in a Gujarati newspaper and asked for new actors. She was chosen and started her acting journey. Her very first film was a Gujarati movie called Ranakdevi. In the same year, she also acted in her first Hindi film, Amar Raj.
One of her most well-known early films was Do Bigha Zamin (1953). In the 1940s and 1950s, she often played characters from myths and legends. Her image as a goddess was so strong that some people would visit her home to ask for her blessings. She acted alongside many famous stars. These included Trilok Kapoor, Bharat Bhushan, Balraj Sahni, and Ashok Kumar.
In the 1970s, Nirupa Roy became famous for playing mothers. She often played the mother of characters acted by Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor. Her roles made her name almost a synonym for a struggling, loving mother. Her acting in the film Deewaar (1975) was very memorable. The dialogues about a mother and son from that movie are still famous today.
Personal Life
Nirupa Roy was married to Kamal Roy. They had two children together, named Yogesh and Kiran Roy.
Later Years and Legacy
Nirupa Roy passed away on 13 October 2004. She suffered a cardiac arrest in Mumbai. She was 73 years old at the time of her death.
Many tributes and articles have been written to remember Nirupa Roy. Her famous lines from the film Deewaar are still iconic. Her acting in that film and her other notable movies are seen as very important in Hindi cinema.
