Rishi Raj Kapoor (born 4 September 1952 – died 30 April 2020) was a famous Indian actor, film director, and producer. He worked mainly in Hindi films. He won many awards, including four Filmfare Awards and a National Film Award.
Rishi Kapoor came from the well-known Kapoor family of actors. He first appeared on screen as a child in his father Raj Kapoor's film Mera Naam Joker (1970). For this role, he won the National Film Award for Best Child Artist. As an adult, his first main role was in the teen romance Bobby (1973). He starred opposite Dimple Kapadia in this film and won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor.
From 1973 to 2000, Kapoor played the main romantic hero in 92 films. Some of his popular films from this time include Khel Khel Mein (1975), Kabhi Kabhie (1976), Sargam (1979), Karz (1980), Prem Rog (1982), Chandni (1989), and Deewana (1992).
After 2000, Kapoor started playing different kinds of roles. He was praised for his acting in films like Luck by Chance (2009), Love Aaj Kal (2009), Do Dooni Chaar (2010), Agneepath (2012), 102 Not Out (2018), and Mulk (2018). He won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor (Critics) for Do Dooni Chaar (2010). For his role in Kapoor & Sons (2016), he won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. In 2008, he received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award for his long career. His last film was Sharmaji Namkeen (2022), which was released after he passed away.
Rishi Kapoor married actress Neetu Kapoor. They met while working on films together. They had two children. He passed away on 30 April 2020, at the age of 67, after battling leukemia.

Early Life and Family Background
Rishi Kapoor was born on 4 September 1952. His family home was in Matunga, South Bombay, India. He came from a Punjabi Hindu family. His parents were Raj Kapoor and Krishna Malhotra.
He went to school at Colonel Brown Cambridge School in Dehradun. He also studied at Campion School in Bombay and Mayo College in Ajmer.
Rishi Kapoor was the second son of the famous actor and director Raj Kapoor. His family is full of successful actors. His brothers, Randhir and Rajiv Kapoor, are also actors. His grandfather was Prithviraj Kapoor. His uncles, Shashi Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor, were also well-known actors. His nieces are the actresses Karisma Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor.
Acting Career Highlights
Rishi Kapoor first appeared on screen when he was about three years old. It was a small role in his father Raj Kapoor's film Shree 420 (1955). He was seen in the song "Pyar Hua, Iqrar Hua Hai".
His first big role as a young actor was in the 1970 film Mera Naam Joker. In this movie, he played the younger version of the main character. His father, Raj Kapoor, directed this film.
Becoming a Lead Actor
Rishi Kapoor got his first main role as an adult in 1973. He starred opposite Dimple Kapadia in the film Bobby. This movie was also directed by his father. Bobby became one of the biggest hits in India during that time. It helped Rishi Kapoor win the Filmfare Best Actor Award.
He once said that Bobby was made to help his father pay off debts from Mera Naam Joker. His father wanted to make a teenage love story but did not have money to cast a big star like Rajesh Khanna.
After Bobby, he acted in many fun comedies in the 1970s. These included Rafoo Chakkar (1975) with Neetu Singh, Amar Akbar Anthony (1977) with Amitabh Bachchan, and Khel Khel Mein (1975) with Zeenat Aman.
Working with Neetu Singh
Kapoor first worked with actress Neetu Singh in Zahreela Insaan (1974). They acted together in many films, like Kabhi Kabhi (1976). They later got married in 1980.
In 1980, Kapoor starred with Tina Munim in Karz. This film became a classic with popular music. In 1982, he played Devdhar in Prem Rog. This film was about widow remarriage and is considered one of his best works.
In 1985, he reunited with Dimple Kapadia in Saagar, 12 years after their debut in Bobby. In the 1980s, he also appeared in many films with multiple stars. These included Naseeb (1981) and Coolie (1983).
Later Career and Directing
In 1991, Kapoor starred in Henna with Pakistani actress Zeba Bakhtiyar. This film was about love across borders. It was planned by his father and directed by his older brother Randhir Kapoor. Henna was also India's entry for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
He also had a main role in the 1993 film Damini. This movie was about social issues and became a classic. Other films where he played the romantic lead include Chandni (1989) and Deewana (1992).
In 1999, Kapoor tried directing with the film Aa Ab Laut Chalen. This movie starred Rajesh Khanna and Aishwarya Rai. It was his only film as a director.
Character Roles and Final Films
In the mid-2000s, Kapoor started playing supporting roles. He was very good at these roles. Some of these films include Hum Tum (2004) and Love Aaj Kal (2009).
In the 2010s, he played many different kinds of characters. He was a villain in Agneepath (2012). He played a gay character in Student of the Year (2012). He also played a real-life mobster in D–Day (2013).
He won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor for his role in Do Dooni Chaar (2010). In this film, he played a father trying to buy a car. He also won a Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for Kapoor & Sons (2016). In 2013, he acted with his wife Neetu Kapoor and son Ranbir Kapoor in the comedy Besharam.
In 2018, he acted with Amitabh Bachchan again in 102 Not Out. They played an old father and son. He was also praised for his role in Mulk (2018). His last film released during his lifetime was The Body (2019).
At the time of his death, he was working on Sharmaji Namkeen. The film was completed later with another actor and released in 2022.
Personal Life

Rishi Kapoor married actress Neetu Singh in 1980. She is also from a Punjabi family. They had two children: a son, Ranbir Kapoor, who is also an actor, and a daughter.
Kapoor wrote his autobiography called Khullam Khulla: Rishi Kapoor Uncensored. It was released on 15 January 2017. He wrote the book with Meena Iyer.
Illness and Passing
Rishi Kapoor was diagnosed with leukemia in 2018. He went to New York City for treatment. After a year of successful treatment, he came back to India on 26 September 2019.
However, he was admitted to Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital on 29 April 2020. He was having trouble breathing. He passed away on 30 April 2020, at 8:45 AM IST, because his leukemia returned. His last rites were performed at Chandanwadi Crematorium.
