Karisma Kapoor (born June 25, 1974) is an Indian actress who is famous for her roles in Hindi films, also known as Bollywood movies. During the 1990s and early 2000s, she was one of the most popular and highest-paid actresses. She has won many awards for her acting, including a National Film Award and four Filmfare Awards.

Coming from the famous Kapoor family of actors, Karisma started her acting career as a teenager. Her first movie was Prem Qaidi (1991). She then starred in many successful movies, including the dramas Jigar (1992) and Anari (1993), and comedies like Raja Babu (1994) and Coolie No. 1 (1995).

Her career took a major turn with the hit romance movie Raja Hindustani (1996), which won her a Filmfare Award for Best Actress. She also won a National Film Award for her role as a dancer in Dil To Pagal Hai (1997). She became even more famous with hit comedies like Hero No.1 (1997) and Biwi No.1 (1999), and the popular family movie Hum Saath-Saath Hain (1999).

Kapoor was praised by critics for her serious roles in the movies Fiza (2000) and Zubeidaa (2001). After 2004, she took a break from acting full-time to focus on her family. She has since appeared in some projects, including the web series Mentalhood (2020) and the movie Murder Mubarak (2024).

Karisma Kapoor was born on June 25, 1974, in Mumbai. Her parents, Randhir Kapoor and Babita, were both actors. Her younger sister, Kareena Kapoor, is also a famous actress. Karisma is part of the well-known Kapoor family, which has many actors. Her grandfather was the legendary actor and director Raj Kapoor, and her great-grandfather was Prithviraj Kapoor.

At home, Karisma is often called "Lolo." She has said the name was inspired by the Italian actress Gina Lollobrigida. Her family has roots in Peshawar and other parts of modern-day Pakistan, but they moved to Bombay (now Mumbai) for their film careers before the partition of India.

From a young age, Karisma was inspired by actresses like Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit and wanted to become an actress. She often went to award shows and film sets with her parents. However, her father did not want the women in his family to work in movies. This disagreement led to her parents separating in 1988. Karisma and her sister Kareena were raised by their mother, who worked hard to support them. Her parents later got back together in 2007.

Karisma attended the Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai. She later said she left college to start acting and help support her family financially.

Karisma Kapoor started acting in 1991 at the age of 16. Her first movie was the romantic drama Prem Qaidi. The film was a success, but her early performances received mixed reviews. After a few movies that didn't do well, she starred in the action movie Jigar (1992) and the romance Anari (1993). Both were big hits and made her a popular star.

In 1994, she starred in the comedy Raja Babu with actor Govinda. It was a huge success. That same year, she appeared in the comedy Andaz Apna Apna with Aamir Khan and Salman Khan. Although the movie didn't make much money at first, it later became a classic comedy loved by many people.

By 1995, she starred in another blockbuster comedy, Coolie No. 1, again with Govinda. Looking back on her early days, she said it was tough.

When I first entered the industry, things were made tough for me... Everyone was so unfair to me... Nobody gave a 17-year-old credit for doing my job reasonably well.

Becoming a Top Actress (1996–2000)

The year 1996 was a major turning point for Karisma. She starred in the romantic drama Raja Hindustani opposite Aamir Khan. The movie was the biggest hit of the year. Her performance as a rich girl who falls in love with a taxi driver was highly praised. She won her first Filmfare Award for Best Actress for this role, which established her as a leading actress in Bollywood.

In 1997, she starred in the musical romance Dil To Pagal Hai with Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit. For her role as a fun-loving dancer, she won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress. She also had great success with comedy films directed by David Dhawan, such as Hero No. 1 (1997) and Biwi No.1 (1999).

In 1999, she was part of the star-studded family drama Hum Saath-Saath Hain, which was one of the biggest hits of the decade. In 2000, she took on a more serious role in the crime drama Fiza. She played a sister searching for her lost brother. Her performance was highly acclaimed, and she won her second Filmfare Award for Best Actress.

Critical Acclaim and Break (2001–2011)

In 2001, Karisma earned more praise for her role in the movie Zubeidaa. She played a real-life princess, and her performance won her the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress. She explained why she chose more serious roles, saying, "I have been here so long... How do I grow as a performer? If I keep doing commercial cinema, I will stagnate and I wanted to grow."

She also starred in the successful family drama Ek Rishtaa: The Bond of Love (2001) and the action movie Shakti: The Power (2002). For her role in Shakti, she was nominated for many Best Actress awards.

In 2003, she made her television debut in the series Karishma – The Miracles of Destiny. After the show ended in 2004, she took a long break from acting to focus on her personal life and family. During her break, she appeared as a judge on dance and comedy reality shows like Nach Baliye.

Recent Work (2012–present)

Karisma returned to acting in 2012 with the movie Dangerous Ishhq. In 2018, she had a small role in the movie Zero.

In 2020, she starred in the web series Mentalhood, which is about the challenges of motherhood. In 2024, she appeared in the mystery movie Murder Mubarak, where she played an actress. Her performance was praised by critics. Later that year, she returned to television as a judge on the dance show India's Best Dancer 4.

Personal Life

Karisma was briefly engaged to actor Abhishek Bachchan in 2002, but they separated a few months later.

On September 29, 2003, she married businessman Sunjay Kapur. The couple has a daughter, Samaira (born in 2005), and a son, Kiaan (born in 2011). Karisma and Sunjay's marriage ended in 2016.

Karisma has said that she chose to take a break from her career to be with her children.

"It [acting] is ingrained in you. It is something that never goes away... It was out of my choice that I didn't do any film because my kids were very young. I wanted to be at home with my family and children."

Karisma Kapoor is involved in charity work. She supports her friend Salman Khan's Being Human Foundation and has walked in fashion shows to raise money for good causes. In 2005, she performed at a concert to raise money for victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. She has also supported campaigns for breast cancer awareness and girls' rights in India.

She has performed in many stage shows and world tours. Besides her charity work, Karisma has been a brand ambassador for many products, including Kellogg's and Garnier. She is also a shareholder in Babyoye.com, a company that sells products for babies and mothers. In 2013, she wrote a book called "My Yummy Mummy Guide," where she shared tips for mothers.
