David Dhawan (born Rajinder Dhawan on August 16, 1951) is a famous Indian director. He is well-known for making many fun and exciting Bollywood movies. He has directed over 42 films, and many of them are comedies that people love.
David Dhawan is part of the famous Dhawan family in the film industry. His sons, Rohit Dhawan and Varun Dhawan, are also involved in movies. He has made many popular films like Coolie No.1, Judwaa, and Partner.

Early Life and Education
David Dhawan was born as Rajinder Dhawan in Agartala, Tripura, India. His family later moved to Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. He went to Christ Church College and BNSD Inter College for his studies.
After school, he joined the FTII to learn acting. It was there that he changed his name to David Dhawan. This was a nickname given to him by his neighbors when he was young. He soon realized that acting wasn't for him. Instead, he decided to study film editing. He became a big fan of famous directors like Manmohan Desai and Hrishikesh Mukherjee. He even won a gold medal when he finished his studies in filmmaking. David has two brothers, Anil Dhawan and Ashok.
Directing Career
David Dhawan started his career in films as an editor. His first editing job was for the movie Saaransh in 1984. Soon after, he began directing films. He became very good at making comedy movies, which is what he is most famous for.
Early Successes
One of his first big hits was the 1993 film Aankhen. This movie starred popular actors like Govinda, Chunky Pandey, and Kader Khan. It was a huge success and helped him become a well-known director. Another successful film from that time was Shola Aur Shabnam.
Later Popular Films
David Dhawan continued to make many successful films. His 2007 movie Partner was also very popular. He has also been involved with the Asian Academy of Film & Television. He even appeared as a judge on TV shows like Nach Baliye 3 and Hans Baliye.
Working with Govinda
David Dhawan is especially known for his work with actor Govinda. They first worked together on the film Taaqatwar in 1989. After that, they made 18 films together! Some of their most famous movies include Swarg (1990), Shola Aur Shabnam (1992), Aankhen (1993), Raja Babu (1994), Coolie No. 1 (1995), Hero No. 1 (1997), and Partner.
Partner, which also starred Salman Khan, was a huge hit. It earned a lot of money in its first week. David Dhawan also worked with Salman Khan on the film Biwi No.1 (1999), which was also very successful.
Personal Life
David Dhawan is married to Karuna Dhawan. They have two sons, Rohit Dhawan and Varun Dhawan. Both of his sons are also involved in the film industry. His brother is the actor Anil Dhawan.
