Nikolaos Georgantas (born February 27, 1880, died November 23, 1958) was a famous Greek athlete. He was best known for competing in the discus throw event.
Biography
Nikolaos Georgantas was born in a place called Steno, near Tripoli in Arcadia, Greece.
Early Olympic Success
He proudly represented Greece at the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. There, he competed in the discus throw and won a Bronze medal. He also tried the shot-put event. However, his first two throws were called fouls, so he decided to stop competing in that event.
Intercalated Games Achievements
Two years later, in 1906, the Intercalated Games were held in his home country, Athens, Greece. Georgantas had great success at these games. He won a gold medal in the stone throw competition. He also earned two silver medals. One silver medal was for the Greek style discus throw, where he finished behind Finland’s Verner Järvinen. The other silver medal was in the regular discus throw, where he was second to America's Martin Sheridan. Sheridan won his second Olympic title in a row.
Later Olympic Appearances
Georgantas had the special honor of being the first Greek flag bearer at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London. This meant he carried his country's flag during the opening ceremony. In his last time competing at the Olympic Games, he placed sixth in the discus throw with a distance of 33.21 meters.
