Nikolay Dmitrievich Kovalyov (Russian: Николай Дмитриевич Ковалёв; 6 August 1949 – 5 April 2019) was an important Russian politician. He was a member of the State Duma, which is like the Russian parliament. In the Duma, he led the committee that looked after veterans.
Before that, from 1996 to 1998, Nikolay Kovalyov was the Director of the FSB. The FSB is a main security agency in Russia, similar to the FBI in the United States. After him, Vladimir Putin took over this role.
Early Life and Career
Nikolay Kovalyov was born in Moscow, Russia, in 1949. He studied at the Moscow Institute of Electronic Machine Building.
He began his career in 1974 when he joined the KGB. The KGB was the main security agency of the Soviet Union before it ended. He worked there for many years.
In 1997, he was given the high rank of General of the Army. This is a very senior military rank in Russia.
Role in Government
In 1999, Nikolay Kovalyov was elected to the State Duma. This is the lower house of the Russian parliament. As a deputy, he helped make laws for the Russian Federation.
He was known for his work in national security. He believed it was very important to protect Russia from threats.
The Bronze Soldier Event
In 2007, there was a disagreement between Russia and Estonia. This was about a World War II memorial in Estonia called the "Bronze Soldier." The Estonian government decided to move the statue.
Nikolay Kovalyov led a group from Russia to Estonia to learn more about the situation. This group hoped to help solve the problem. However, the visit did not go as planned. Estonian officials chose not to meet with his group.
