Release and First Look
Fans got their first peek at Skybound at San Diego Comic-Con in 2015. A video clip was shown there and later put online on the Lego YouTube channel.
The Lego Group also hinted at the story on November 5, 2015, by releasing the first official poster. It showed Jay battling Nadakhan and his sky pirate crew. A full trailer for the season was released on the Lego YouTube channel on January 7, 2016. The season officially started on Cartoon Network on March 24, 2016, and the final episode, The Way Back, aired on July 15, 2016.
The Story of Skybound
The story begins with Clouse, who is now a ghost. He finds a magical item called the Teapot of Tyrahn and accidentally frees Nadakhan, an evil Djinn. Nadakhan grants Clouse three wishes, but then traps him inside the teapot. Nadakhan then starts looking for the Realm Crystal to bring his pirate crew back together.
When Nadakhan finds out the ninja are guarding the crystal, he tricks people into thinking the ninja are criminals. This makes the ninja wanted by the law! They split up to escape, but Nadakhan captures Sensei Wu and Misako, trapping them in the teapot. Nadakhan eventually finds the Realm Crystal.
While in Kryptarium Prison, the ninja meet Captain Soto. He tells them that they need venom from a rare Tiger Widow spider to defeat Nadakhan. So, the ninja decide to find this spider. Meanwhile, Nadakhan frees his crew from different realms, and they fix up their airship, Misfortune's Keep. They visit Nadakhan's home realm, Djinjago, and discover it's falling apart because the ninja destroyed the Cursed Realm. Nadakhan gets a special Djinn Blade, which he uses to transfer the souls of Clouse, Wu, and Misako from the teapot into the sword. He then returns to Ninjago, ready for revenge.
Nadakhan tricks Jay into making his first wish. To impress Nya, Jay wishes he was rich and wasn't born in a junkyard. This wish makes Jay discover that he was adopted and his real father is a famous actor! Nadakhan then traps Kai and Zane in his sword. He starts his plan to create a "New Djinjago" by lifting parts of Ninjago into the sky.
The ninja reach Tiger Widow Island, and Jay manages to get the venom. However, he is then captured and taken to Misfortune's Keep. Nadakhan reveals his plan to marry Nya, who looks like his lost love, Delara. If he marries her on Djinn land, he will gain unlimited wishes! Lloyd, Jay, Cole, and Nya are captured by the sky pirates. They use up most of their wishes trying to fight back, except for Jay, who still has one wish left. Nadakhan traps Lloyd and Cole in his sword, leaving only Jay and Nya free. They escape by creating a powerful fusion dragon of water and lightning. In their final battle against the pirates, Nya pushes Jay into a portal to save him, and she is captured.
Jay gathers his friends and allies, and they head to New Djinjago. He gets the Djinn Blade and uses it to free the other ninja, Wu, and Misako. But the wedding ceremony is completed, and Nadakhan becomes super powerful with infinite wishes. During the big fight, Flintlocke shoots Nadakhan with the venom, but Nya is also hit and sadly passes away in Jay's arms.
Heartbroken, Jay makes his final wish: he wishes that the Teapot of Tyrahn had never been found in the first place. Because of this wish, Nadakhan is forced to grant it, and the entire season's events are reversed! Only Jay and Nya remember what happened. The season ends with them hugging. Clouse finds the teapot again, but locals chase him away, making sure Nadakhan is never released again.
