About Nitty Scott
Nitty Scott was born in Michigan and raised in Orlando, Florida. Her mother is Puerto Rican and her father is African American from New Orleans. Nitty started rapping when she was 14 years old. At that time, she was studying creative writing in art school.
Writing was a way for her to express herself. She wrote poetry before she started making music. When she was 17, she moved to Brooklyn, New York. She wanted to become a rapper there. She finished high school at John Jay High School.
In New York, Nitty started a hip-hop group called Boombox Family. Her goal was to "preserve and progress hip-hop culture." She later decided to work on other independent projects. Nitty once said that if she hadn't become a musician, she would have studied journalism in college.
Early Performances and Recognition
In 2011, Nitty Scott performed at the BET Hip Hop Awards. She was part of a "cypher," which is a group freestyle rap session. Other famous artists like Estelle and Lecrae were also there. She also performed at the 2011 Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival. Q-Tip was the main performer at that festival.
In 2012, Nitty Scott performed at the Royal Arena Festival in Switzerland. She shared the stage with artists like Ice Cube and Mos Def.
First Music Releases
Nitty Scott released her first official EP (Extended Play) called The Boombox Diaries, Vol. 1 on August 28, 2012. An EP is like a mini-album with fewer songs. This record featured songs with other artists like Kendrick Lamar and Action Bronson. The EP was praised by music critics. For example, XXL magazine called her a "conscious rapper" and liked the music production.
On June 16, 2013, Nitty Scott released her music video for the song "Flower Child." This video featured Kendrick Lamar. Her fans helped fund the video through a special online campaign.

Musical Style and Influences
Nitty Scott's rapping style has been compared to famous female rappers like MC Lyte and Lauryn Hill. She has said that she is influenced by groups like the Wu-Tang Clan, A Tribe Called Quest, and Slum Village.
In her album Creature!, Nitty Scott explores her Afro-Boricua identity. This means she connects with her African and Puerto Rican heritage. She uses sounds from Afro-Caribbean music in her songs. For example, the album includes sounds of indigenous coquí frogs and tumba drums. These sounds help to tell a story about her ancestors.
