Early Life and Career
Nitty Scott was born in Michigan and grew up in Orlando, Florida. Her mother is from Puerto Rico and her father is African American from New Orleans. Scott began rapping when she was 14 years old. At the time, she was studying creative writing at an art school. She loved writing as a way to express herself.
When she was 17, Scott moved to Brooklyn, New York, to become a professional rapper. While living in New York, she started a hip-hop group called the Boombox Family. The group's goal was to help hip-hop culture grow. Scott later ended the Boombox Family in 2014 to work on other projects.
Becoming Famous
In 2011, Scott's career took a big step forward. She performed at the BET Hip Hop Awards. She was part of a "cypher," which is when a group of rappers take turns freestyling. She performed alongside famous artists like DJ Premier and Estelle. That same year, she also performed at the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival.
In 2012, Scott performed at the Royal Arena Festival in Switzerland. She shared the stage with famous rappers like Ice Cube and Mos Def.
First EP and Album
Scott released her first official EP, The Boombox Diaries, Vol. 1, in 2012. An EP is like a short album. The record featured other popular artists like Kendrick Lamar and Action Bronson. Music critics liked the EP. One writer from XXL magazine called her a "conscious rapper," meaning her lyrics are thoughtful and have a message.
In 2013, Scott released a music video for her song "Flower Child," which also featured Kendrick Lamar. The video was paid for by her fans through a fundraising website. On May 23, 2014, Scott released her first full album, The Art of Chill. She later released two more albums, Creature! in 2017 and Jiggy Mami in 2021.
Music Style and Identity
Nitty Scott's rapping style has been compared to famous female rappers like MC Lyte and Lauryn Hill. She has said that her biggest influences are hip-hop groups like the Wu-Tang Clan and A Tribe Called Quest.
In her album Creature!, Scott explores her Afro-Boricua (or Afro-Puerto Rican) background. She uses sounds from Afro-Caribbean music to connect with her heritage. Some songs on the album include sounds of the coquí, a small frog native to Puerto Rico, and tumba drums. These sounds help create a feeling of the island's history.
