Nizan Mansur de Carvalho Guanaes Gomes (born May 9, 1958, in Salvador, Bahia) is a well-known Brazilian businessman and advertising expert. He is also a philanthropist, which means he helps others by donating money and time to good causes. Nizan is also a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador.

He is the founder and CEO of N.ideias, a company that helps some of Brazil's biggest businesses with their plans and strategies.

Nizan also helped start and was a partner in the ABC Group. This group was sold in 2015 in a very big deal in the Brazilian advertising world.

He has been recognized as one of the most influential Brazilians by the Financial Times and one of the most creative people in the world by Fast Company. In 2014, he was named Man of the Year in the Leadership category by GQ magazine. In 2021, he received a high honor in Brazil called the Order of Rio Branco for his work in business and helping society.

Nizan's Early Life and Career

Nizan Guanaes was born in 1958 in Salvador, Bahia, a city in Brazil. He went to Colégio Marista for school and later studied business at the Universidade Federal da Bahia.

He started his career as a copywriter in his hometown. A copywriter is someone who writes words for advertisements. Later, he moved to Rio de Janeiro and worked at an advertising agency called Artplan. In 1985, he moved to São Paulo and became known as a very skilled copywriter at agencies like DPZ and W/GGK.

In 1988, Nizan won a special award called the Gold Lion at the Cannes Festival. He won it for a famous TV advertisement he created for the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo. This ad is considered one of the best advertisements ever made.

The next year, he bought and took over an advertising agency called DM9. This agency later joined with DDB to become DM9DDB in 1997. In 2000, DM9 was bought by DDB Worldwide.

In the same year, Nizan started an internet website called iG. It became the second-largest free internet portal in Brazil.

Two years later, in 2002, Nizan created the ABC Group with his business partner João Augusto (Guga) Valente.

Helping Others and Social Causes

In 2004, Nizan helped start the Association of Entrepreneurs Friends of UNESCO with Oskar Metsavaht. This group works to improve public education, promote culture, and protect Brazil's historical places.

Since 2010, Nizan has been part of a special group for UNAIDS. This is a program from the United Nations (UN) that works to find ways to prevent HIV.

Nizan is also a member of several non-profit groups. These include:

  • The Clinton Global Initiative, started by Bill Clinton, which helps people solve big global problems.
  • The World Economic Forum, which brings together leaders to discuss important topics like health and the environment.
  • Endeavor, which finds and supports entrepreneurs who can help the world grow in a good way.
  • The Women in the World Foundation, which helps organizations that work to improve the lives of women and girls.

In 2011, Nizan also helped create "Together for Girls." This project works to identify and stop violence against girls and deal with its effects on society.

Nizan also writes articles for the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo every two weeks.

Founding the ABC Group

The ABC Group was started by Nizan Guanaes and Guga Valente in March 2002. It was a large company that owned many other companies, including advertising agencies like Africa, DM9DDB, and Loducca.

In the same year, Nizan also founded Africa, which became one of the ten largest advertising agencies in Brazil by 2015.

Awards and Recognition

Nizan Guanaes has received many awards and honors throughout his career:

  • In 2000, he received a gold medal in the Rio Branco Order from the former Brazilian president, Fernando Henrique Cardoso. This award recognizes important services and good actions for Brazil.

  • In 2011, he was recognized by Advertising Age, a respected American magazine, as one of the most influential professionals in media and marketing.
  • Also in 2011, Fast Company magazine named him one of the world's 100 most creative people.
  • In May 2021, Nizan was named a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador. This title was given to him because of his support for UNESCO's work in education, helping people be included in society, and empowering groups that need help.
  • In 2013, Exame magazine listed him as one of sixteen Brazilian entrepreneurs who were sure to make history.
  • In 2014, he was named Man of the Year in the Leadership category by GQ magazine.
  • In the same year, he was voted the most trustworthy advertiser for the third time by Seleções magazine and the Brazilian Institute of Public Opinion and Statistics (IBOPE).
  • In December 2014, he won the Jeca Tatu award, which honors the best professionals in Brazilian advertising.

Personal Life

Nizan Guanaes has one son, Antonio Guanaes. He is married to Donata Meirelles, who is a fashion director at Vogue Brazil.
