History of Nogalus Prairie

Early Settlers and Names

The area was first settled by farmers. They came from Alabama and Georgia. At first, they called the area Prairie View. In 1858, a post office opened there. It was named Nogallis Prairie.

Local stories say the community got its name from an event involving horse thieves. This led some people to call it "Nogallows". In the early 1860s, the name changed to Nogallis. Later, the post office spelling became its current form.

Community Growth and Decline

The post office closed in 1868. But it opened again in 1894 as Nogalus. Between 1900 and 1918, the community was busy. It had a Methodist church and several stores. There was also a cotton gin, a sawmill, and a gristmill. A Woodmen of the World lodge was also present.

The community started to decline after World War I. The post office closed for good in 1920. By the mid-1930s, only a few families remained. They were served by one church and one store.

Later Years and Population

In the 1960s, about 20 residents lived there. They were mostly farmers and ranchers. Some also worked in the timber industry. The population grew to 41 people in 1990. By 2000, it reached 109 residents.

The area was originally called Nogales Prairie. This name came from the many walnut and pecan trees. These trees grew well when Texas was a part of Mexico. Spanish families lived there at that time. In the late 1800s, it was sometimes known as Logallis Prairie.
