Noroton is a lovely community located in the town of Darien, in Fairfield County, Connecticut. It's not a separate city or town, but a special area called a census-designated place (CDP). This means it has clear borders and a name, but it's still part of the larger town of Darien.

Noroton sits in the southwest part of Darien. It stretches from the Metro-North Railroad line in the north all the way down to the beautiful Long Island Sound in the south. The southern part of Noroton is on a piece of land called Noroton Neck. This area is surrounded by water, with Holly Pond to the west and the Goodwives River to the east.

Noroton is next to the city of Stamford on its western side. To the east, it borders the Tokeneke neighborhood, which is also part of Darien. Just north of Noroton, you'll find the area known as Noroton Heights.

Noroton was officially recognized as a census-designated place before the 2020 census. This helps the government collect important information about the people living there.

What is a Census-Designated Place?

A census-designated place (CDP) is an area that the United States Census Bureau identifies for statistical purposes. Think of it like a specific neighborhood or a part of a town that has a name and boundaries. However, it doesn't have its own local government, like a mayor or town council.

Why Do We Have CDPs?

The Census Bureau uses CDPs to gather information about communities that might not be official cities or towns. This helps them understand where people live and how populations are changing. It's useful for planning services like schools, roads, and emergency services.

Noroton's Location and Surroundings

Noroton is nestled in a scenic part of Connecticut. Its location near the Long Island Sound means residents can enjoy coastal views and activities.

Waterways and Natural Features

The community's southern half, Noroton Neck, is almost surrounded by water. Holly Pond is on the west side, and the Goodwives River is on the east. These waterways add to the natural beauty of the area.

Nearby Communities

Noroton shares borders with several other places. To the west is the larger city of Stamford. To the east, you'll find the Tokeneke neighborhood, which is also part of Darien. Just north of Noroton is Noroton Heights, another area within Darien.
