A Look at North Dell's Past
North Dell has an interesting history. Many years ago, people who had to leave their homes in Gress came to live here. This happened in the early 1700s. Later, in 1874, more people from Gress moved to North Dell. This was when the old Dell Farm became available.
The Dell Enterprise Mill
In the 1820s, the owner of Lewis decided to build a special factory in North Dell. This factory, called the Dell Enterprise, opened in 1831. It wasn't very successful, so by 1849, it was changed into a mill. A mill is a place where grain is ground into flour. The mill closed during World War II. It opened again after the war and kept working until 1970.
Cross School's Story
After a new law about education in 1872, a school was built in North Dell. It was called the Cross School. This school taught children from North Dell, South Dell, Cross, and part of Swainbost. The Cross School closed in 2011. At that time, it had 13 students. Today, the old school buildings are owned by a group called Comunn Eachdraidh Nis. They use it as a place to keep historical records, a museum, and a café.
Important Places in North Dell
Comunn Eachdraidh Nis Centre
Comunn Eachdraidh Nis is a special historical society. It was the first of its kind in the Western Isles, starting in 1977. Now, it's located in the old Cross School building. This center is like a museum. It has local artwork, old objects, and many photographs. You can also find community records, and recordings in both Gaelic and English. The art here often shows local people and their culture.
Dell Farm's Beginnings
The place known as Dell Farm started out differently. In the 1800s, it was first built as a distillery. This is a place where drinks like whisky are made. But later, in the 1870s, it was made bigger and became Dell Farm.
Ness Hall: A Community Spot
Ness Hall is also known as The Murdo Macaulay Memorial Hall. For many years, starting in the mid-1960s, it was a very popular place. People would go there for late-night dances and other community events.
Teampall Chliamain: An Old Church
Records show that an old church called Teampall Chliamain (St Clement's) was once in North Dell. However, no one knows exactly where it was located. People from the Ness Archaeological Landscape Survey have looked for it. They have found two possible places where the church might have been.
