The Republic of North Ossetia-Alania (which is called Respublika Severnaya Osetiya–Alaniya in Russian) is a small republic. It is located in the northern part of the Caucasus mountains. This area is part of Russia.

In the Middle Ages, this land was known as "Alania." It has been under Russian control since 1804. When the Soviet Union was breaking apart in the early 1990s, many people in the area felt a strong sense of national pride. Some Ossetian people wanted to bring back the name Alania for their country. So, in November 1994, the name Alania was officially added to the republic's title. That is why it is now called the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania.

Many people have come to North Ossetia as refugees. They have sought safety here because of wars in nearby countries. These include Chechnya and South Ossetia.
