North Red Deer was once a small village in central Alberta, Canada. Today, it is part of the larger City of Red Deer.
This former village was located on the north side of the Red Deer River. It was built along the Calgary and Edmonton (C&E) Railway line. This railway was later bought by the Canadian Pacific Railway. The area where North Red Deer used to be is now part of Red Deer's Riverside Meadows neighbourhood. Some parts are also in the Highland Green and Oriole Park neighbourhoods.

History of North Red Deer
North Red Deer started as a "hamlet" in 1894. A hamlet is a very small settlement, even smaller than a village. This happened when the C&E railway line was finished. A bridge over the Red Deer River was also built then.
Becoming a Village
On February 17, 1911, North Red Deer officially became a "village." This means it got its own local government. The official order was signed a few months later, on June 18, 1911. Walter Webb became the first mayor of the village on March 13, 1911.
Joining the City of Red Deer
After some discussions, the Village of North Red Deer joined with the City of Red Deer. This happened on January 1, 1948. The last meeting of the village council was held on December 24, 1947. This meant North Red Deer was no longer a separate village.
What Happened Next?
In 1999, the City of Red Deer renamed the area where the old village was. It became known as Riverside Meadows. The city also created plans to develop this area. These plans help guide how the neighbourhood grows and changes. In 2011, the City of Red Deer celebrated 100 years since North Red Deer became a village.
Population Changes Over Time
|
During its time as a village, North Red Deer grew quite a bit. In 1911, it had a population of 304 people. By 1946, just before it joined Red Deer, its population had grown to 698 people.
