North Shields is a small town located on the eastern coast of the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. It offers beautiful views of Boston Bay, which is part of the larger Spencer Gulf. This town is situated about 11 kilometers (7 miles) north of the city of Port Lincoln.

Exploring North Shields

North Shields is a quiet place with some important connections. It's known for its location and the services it provides to the nearby areas.

Getting Around Town

The main road that runs through North Shields is the Lincoln Highway. This highway goes from north to south, connecting the town to other places. It's a key route for travel in the region.

Port Lincoln Airport

A very important feature of North Shields is the Port Lincoln Airport. This airport is located right in the town, close to its border with Point Boston. It serves as a gateway for people traveling to and from the Eyre Peninsula.

Post Office History

North Shields once had its own post office. It started as a small postal receiving office in 1908. By 1910, it became a full post office. Today, postal services are handled by a Community Postal Agent. This agent operates out of the Port Lincoln Caravan Park, which is also on the Lincoln Highway.

Former School Site

The town also used to have a primary school. However, this school closed down. In 1973, the Port Lincoln Lions Club built a hostel for people on the old school site. This shows how the town has changed over time.

A Look Back in Time

North Shields has a unique history, including an important early mission site.

The Lutheran Mission

From 1849 to 1853, there was a Lutheran Aboriginal mission in North Shields. This mission was connected to Reverend Clamor Wilhelm Schuermann. He was a linguist who had created a dictionary of the local Parnkalla language in 1844. This dictionary helped people understand the language of the Aboriginal people in the area.

In 1853, Reverend Schuermann moved away, and the mission in North Shields closed. The people who lived at the mission then moved to another mission in Poonindie. Today, the remaining parts of this historic mission are protected. They are listed on the South Australian Heritage Register as the C. W. Schuermann's Mission Site. This helps preserve an important part of the town's past.
