History of North Star

North Star was officially planned and marked out on a map, or platted, in 1852. It was built along the main road that connected two other cities, Greenville and Celina. The village is located about halfway between these two places.

Why is it called North Star?

The village got its name because of where it was located. It sat right on the edge of a very large swampy area called the Great Black Swamp. North Star was the northernmost point in Darke County that was not covered by wetlands or swamp. This made it a "north star" or guiding point for people traveling in the area.
