The Notoreas niphocrena is a type of moth that belongs to the Geometridae family. This moth is special because it is endemic to New Zealand. This means you can only find it living naturally in New Zealand and nowhere else in the world!

Discovering and Naming the Moth

Scientists give every living thing a special name. This helps them organize and study nature. This moth was first described in 1883 by a scientist named Edward Meyrick. He found the moth high up near Arthur's Pass in New Zealand. This was about 1350 meters (or 4,430 feet) above sea level!

When Meyrick first found it, he named the moth Pasithea niphocrena. A year later, in 1884, he wrote an even more detailed description of it. Then, in 1886, he changed the group (or genus) the moth belonged to. This is when it got its current name, Notoreas niphocrena.

Another scientist, George Hudson, also wrote about this moth. He included it in his books about New Zealand moths and butterflies. He even drew pictures of it in his 1928 book, The Butterflies and Moths of New Zealand. The original moth specimen that Meyrick used to describe the species is kept safe at the Natural History Museum, London.

What Does This Moth Look Like?

The Notoreas niphocrena moth is about 24 to 25 millimeters long. That's roughly the size of a small coin! The moth's front wings are a dark brownish-gray color. They have a mix of orange and faint stripes. You can see two curved white lines on the front wings. These lines have dark edges. Sometimes, the space between these white lines can look orange.

There's also a thin, wavy white band in the middle of the wing. This band has a strong bend in the middle. It's bordered by black on the front and followed by a wavy orange line on the back. Near the edge of the wing, there's another wavy orange line. The back wings of the moth are mostly orange. They are lighter near the front. The part closest to the body is dark brownish-gray mixed with orange. There are also dark brownish-gray bands near the outer edge of the back wings.

Where Does This Moth Live?

As we mentioned, the Notoreas niphocrena moth is only found in New Zealand. It lives in both the North Island and the South Island. In the North Island, you can find it on Mount Hector and Mount Dundas. These mountains are part of the Tararua Range.

In the South Island, this moth has been seen in places like the Mount Arthur Tableland. It has also been found on Bold Peak in the Otago region.

Life Cycle and Daily Habits

The female Notoreas niphocrena moth is very clever about where she lays her eggs. She places them inside the flower buds of specific plants. When the tiny caterpillars hatch from the eggs, they immediately eat their way into the leaves or buds. This helps them hide from hungry predators. Once they grow a bit bigger, they come out to munch on the fresh new parts of the plant.

When it's time to change into an adult moth, the caterpillar forms a loose cocoon. This cocoon is usually found on the ground, right under the plant it was eating.

These moths are "day-flying" moths. This means they are active during the daytime, not at night like many other moths. They fly low to the ground but can move very quickly. They constantly vibrate their wings. This helps them take off super fast if they need to escape danger! Adult moths are usually seen flying around in January.

Home and Food

This moth loves to live in open areas high up in the mountains. These are called high alpine habitats. The caterpillars of the Notoreas niphocrena moth eat specific plants. These plants are also native to New Zealand. They belong to the plant groups called Kelleria and Pimelea. These plants are very important because they provide all the food the young moths need to grow.
