History of Nuangola
What Does the Name Nuangola Mean?
The name Nuangola likely comes from an Algonquian language. These languages were spoken by the Native American tribes who lived in the area. The main tribe here was the Delaware (Lenape). Some Nanticoke and Shawnee people also lived nearby.
There are a few stories about how the name came to be. One legend says a Native American maiden named Nuangola drowned in the lake. Another idea is that Nuangola is an Algonquian word meaning "Three-Cornered Lake" or "Triangular Lake." Early settlers used this name, but it was changed to Nuangola to avoid confusion with other towns. Some people also think Nuangola means "people of the north."
Becoming a Borough
Nuangola officially became a borough in 1908. Just two years later, in 1910, only about 100 people lived there. Over the next few decades, the population grew. The surrounding county became a big center for mining, which brought many European immigrants to the area.
In the 20th century, Nuangola became a popular place for summer vacations around the lake. Today, over 600 people live in Nuangola. Many are retired, and some have second homes there. The population often grows in the summer when more people come to enjoy the lake.
The Grove Theatre
Nuangola is home to the famous Grove Theatre. From the 1930s to the 1950s, it was a very popular place for summer plays. Many famous actors, like Kirk Douglas and Joseph Cotten, performed there early in their careers.
The theatre closed for many years but reopened in 2006. Since then, it has put on many well-known plays. Some of these include Godspell, On Golden Pond, and A Christmas Carol.
