O'Donnell is a city in West Texas. Most of it is in Lynn County, but a small part reaches into Dawson County, Texas. In 2020, about 704 people lived there. The part of O'Donnell in Lynn County is close to the bigger city of Lubbock.

History of O'Donnell

O'Donnell was founded in 1910. It was named after Tom J. O'Donnell, who helped plan and build railroads. The town was created because people expected a railway, the Pecos and Northern Texas Railway, to build tracks through the area.

A part of this railway was built from Slaton to Lamesa in 1910. However, these tracks were later removed in 1999. In 2016, there was a discussion about something displayed at the school. When it was asked to be taken down, students worked together to put up sticky notes with positive messages on the wall.

Geography of O'Donnell

O'Donnell is located on the high plains of the Llano Estacado. You can find it at these coordinates: 32°57′49″N 101°49′58″W / 32.96361°N 101.83278°W / 32.96361; -101.83278. U.S. Highway 87 passes just outside the city. This highway goes southwest about 17 miles to Lamesa and north about 45 miles to Lubbock.

The United States Census Bureau says that O'Donnell covers an area of about 2.2 square kilometers (0.86 square miles). All of this area is land.

  • Dan Blocker: He was born in DeKalb, Texas, but moved to O'Donnell as a baby. He is famous for playing Hoss Cartwright on the TV show Bonanza. The O'Donnell Heritage Museum has a special room with items related to him.
  • Phil Hardberger: He used to be the mayor of San Antonio. He grew up in O'Donnell. His parents are buried in the city.
