History of O'Kean
O'Kean was first settled a long time ago, even before the American Civil War (which happened from 1861 to 1865). The town got its name from Father James O'Kean. He was a priest from St. Paul's Catholic Church. He often visited the community while traveling to a nearby town called Pocahontas.
In the 1870s, O'Kean grew quickly. This happened when the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway was built through the area. Many businesses started up, including one that made railroad ties. These are the wooden or concrete supports that hold the train tracks in place. O'Kean officially became an incorporated town in 1913. This means it became an official city with its own local government.
