Oak Beach–Captree, often called Oak Beach, was a special kind of community in New York. It was known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it was an area identified by the United States Census Bureau for gathering population data. It was located in the town of Babylon in Suffolk County.

In 2010, about 286 people lived there. Before 2010, this area was part of a larger CDP called Gilgo-Oak Beach-Captree, New York. Oak Beach–Captree included several small beach communities. These communities were built on a narrow strip of land called a barrier island. This island is along the southern edge of Long Island. The communities included Oak Beach, Oak Island, and Captree Island. In 2020, Oak Beach–Captree was divided into two separate CDPs: Oak Beach and Captree.

Where Was Oak Beach–Captree Located?

Oak Beach–Captree was found at specific geographic coordinates: 40 degrees, 38 minutes, 21 seconds North and 73 degrees, 17 minutes, 35 seconds West.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the total area of this CDP was about 9.5 square kilometers (3.7 square miles). Most of this area, about 7.1 square kilometers (2.7 square miles), was land. The remaining 2.4 square kilometers (0.9 square miles), which is about 25% of the total, was water.

Who Lived in Oak Beach–Captree?

The population numbers from the census usually count people who live there all year. However, many houses in Oak Beach–Captree were used as second homes. This means people owned them but did not live there full-time. Even so, the number of people living there all year was slowly growing.

The land where these communities are built is not privately owned. Instead, it is leased from the Town of Babylon. A lease is like renting something for a long time. These leases are set to last until the year 2065. However, the houses themselves are owned by the people who live in them. If the leases are not renewed in the future, the homeowners might have to move their houses to a different location. Something similar happened at High Hill Beach when Jones Beach State Park was created.
