Oak Grove is a city located in both Jackson and Lafayette counties in the state of Missouri, United States. In 2020, about 8,157 people lived there. Oak Grove is also part of the larger Kansas City metropolitan area.

History of Oak Grove

A post office opened in Oak Grove in 1840. The town was first known as Lickskillet. The city was officially mapped out in 1878. It got its name from a group of oak trees nearby.

The 2017 Oak Grove Tornado

On March 6, 2017, a powerful tornado hit Oak Grove. It touched down just before 9:00 pm. The tornado moved across the city from west to east.

This tornado caused a lot of damage. It harmed 483 houses and 12 businesses. The areas between 25th and Broadway Streets were hit especially hard. Fifteen people were hurt, but thankfully, no one died.

The storm also knocked out power and communication lines. The National Weather Service studied the tornado. They rated it an EF3 tornado. This means it had strong winds and caused serious damage.

Missouri Governor Eric Greitens declared a state of emergency. This helped the area get special aid. He visited Oak Grove the next day. He met with first responders and people affected by the tornado.

Oak Grove covers a total area of about 6.19 square miles (16.03 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 6.17 square miles (15.98 square kilometers), is land. A small part, about 0.02 square miles (0.05 square kilometers), is water.

Oak Grove has its own newspaper. It is called "Focus on Oak Grove." Spaar Publications LLC owns this newspaper. Brothers John and Joe Spaar are the co-publishers. They also print a newspaper for the town of Odessa. That paper is called The Odessan.

In the early 1980s, a special version of the Monopoly board game was made. This game was themed around the town of Oak Grove.
