Oak Grove is a city located in Jackson and Lafayette counties in the state of Missouri, United States. In 2020, about 8,157 people lived there. Oak Grove is part of the larger Kansas City metropolitan area.

History of Oak Grove
A post office opened in Oak Grove in 1840. The town was first known as Lickskillet. The city was officially planned and mapped out in 1878. It got its name from a group of oak trees that grew near the original town site.
The 2017 Tornado Event
On March 6, 2017, a powerful tornado hit Oak Grove. It touched down just before 9:00 pm. The tornado moved across the city from west to east. It caused damage to 483 homes and 12 businesses. The areas between 25th and Broadway Streets were hit especially hard.
Fifteen people were hurt, but thankfully, no one died. The storm also knocked out power and communication services. The National Weather Service later said it was an EF3 tornado. This means it was a very strong tornado. The Governor of Missouri, Eric Greitens, declared a state of emergency. He visited Oak Grove the next day to see the damage and meet with people who helped and those affected.

Oak Grove covers a total area of about 6.19 square miles (16.03 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 6.17 square miles (15.98 square kilometers), is land. A small part, about 0.02 square miles (0.05 square kilometers), is water.

Oak Grove has its own newspaper called "Focus on Oak Grove." This newspaper is owned by Spaar Publications LLC. The co-publishers are brothers, John and Joe Spaar. They also publish "The Odessan," a newspaper for the nearby town of Odessa.

In the early 1980s, a special edition of the popular Monopoly board game was made. This version was designed around the town of Oak Grove.

In the year 2000, the census showed that 5,535 people lived in Oak Grove. There were 1,944 households and 1,479 families. The population density was about 1,140 people per square mile.

Education in Oak Grove
Most of Oak Grove in Jackson County is part of the Oak Grove R-VI School District. A small section is in the Grain Valley R-V School District. For the part of Oak Grove in Lafayette County, some areas are in the Oak Grove school district, while others are in the Odessa R-VII School District.
The Oak Grove R-VI School District has several schools. These include one primary school, one elementary school, one middle school, and Oak Grove High School.
Metropolitan Community College serves the Oak Grove and Grain Valley school districts. The Odessa school district is also served by MCC, but it is not in their main tax area.
Oak Grove also has a public library. It is a branch of the Mid-Continent Public Library.
