Oak Grove is a small area in southern Cherokee County, Georgia, in the United States. It is known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a place where people live that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Instead, it's part of the larger county.
Oak Grove is located near where Bells Ferry Road and Georgia 92 meet. Some maps show its center a bit further west, near Georgia 92 and Wade Green Road. About 11,793 people live in the area that was once known as Oak Grove.
What Happened to the Name?
The name "Oak Grove" isn't used as much anymore to describe this area. This change happened because of how the United States Postal Service organizes mail.
In the 1960s, when the ZIP Code system was created, the Postal Service decided to include Oak Grove as part of Acworth for mailing addresses. This meant that mail sent to people in Oak Grove would have an "Acworth" address.
Over time, as more people moved to the area and new neighborhoods were built (a process called suburbanization), the original "Oak Grove" identity slowly faded away. Even though it's closest to Woodstock and not far from Kennesaw, its mailing address became Acworth.
Important Places Today
Even though the name isn't as common, a few original parts of the Oak Grove community still exist.
One important landmark is Oak Grove Elementary School (Georgia). It is one of the oldest schools in the state of Georgia. Another original place is the Oak Grove Station of the United States Postal Service.
The local fire department, which used to be run by volunteers, is now part of the professional Cherokee County fire system. You might also find some newer neighborhoods with "Oak Grove" in their names. However, these neighborhoods were built after the area was given the Acworth mailing designation.
