History of Oakland
Oakland has an interesting past. It used to be the main town, or county seat, for Pickens County, Chickasaw Nation. This was a part of the Chickasaw Nation before Oklahoma became a state.
County Seat Role
As the county seat, Oakland was home to the county courthouse. This meant important legal meetings and decisions happened here. Even though not many people lived in Oakland, the town became very busy when the county court was in session. Pickens County was quite large, stretching from Chickasha to Madill.
