History of Madill

Madill was started in 1900 by William N. Taliaferro. He had moved to the area in 1886, when it was known as Pickens County, Chickasaw Nation in the Indian Territory. Mr. Taliaferro owned a large farm and ranches nearby.

The town of Oakland, about 2 miles (3.2 km) northwest of Madill, used to be the biggest town in the area. But when the St. Louis, San Francisco and New Orleans Railroad built its tracks through Madill, Madill started to grow, and Oakland became smaller.

A post office opened in Madill on April 29, 1901. The city officially became a chartered city on September 12, 1902. The first public school opened in 1903 in a four-room building.

Early Industries and Oil Discoveries

Farming and ranching were the main jobs in Madill early on. This was because the land was very good for growing crops, and the railroad helped transport goods to markets. There were also natural springs and oil nearby.

The Arbuckle oilfield was found in 1904. It had another big boom in 1924. In 1939, Pure Oil Company found oil east of town. They built a small town called Pure Camp for the oil workers.

Tornadoes in Madill

Pure Camp was hit by a strong tornado on April 2, 1957. Two people died, and the camp was destroyed. It closed for good in July 1959. Madill was also hit by another strong tornado on April 22, 2020.
