Oberhünigen is a small town, also called a municipality, located in the Bern-Mittelland area of Switzerland. It's part of the canton (like a state) of Bern.

History of Oberhünigen

Oberhünigen was first mentioned way back in 1148. It was called Huningen superior then. For a long time, until 1980, it was an "exclave" of another town called Schlosswil. This means it was a piece of land belonging to Schlosswil but not directly connected to it.

Throughout its history, Oberhünigen has always been a small farming village. It sits right on the edge of a forest.

Geography and Nature

Oberhünigen covers an area of about 6 square kilometers (2.3 square miles). A big part of the land, about 38.7%, is used for farming. Even more, about 57%, is covered by forests. The rest of the land has buildings, roads, or small rivers.

Most of the forested land is made up of thick, heavy forests. Farmers in Oberhünigen grow crops on about 11.5% of the farmland. They also use 26.2% of the land for pastures where animals graze. All the water in the municipality comes from flowing rivers and streams.

Parts of Oberhünigen

The municipality includes the main village of Oberhünigen. It also has a tiny village called Äbersold. You can find individual farmhouses scattered across the Kurzenberg area. More than half of the municipality is covered by a large forest called the Toppwald.

In 2010, Oberhünigen joined a new administrative area. This new area is called Verwaltungskreis Bern-Mittelland.

Coat of Arms

The coat of arms for Oberhünigen is quite unique. It shows two swan heads coming out of a black background. The swans are white with golden beaks. This design is called Per fess Sable two Swan Heads issuant Argent beaked Or and of he last.

Oberhünigen has a population of about 325 people. Most people in Oberhünigen speak German as their main language. About 96.3% of the residents speak German. A smaller number of people speak Serbo-Croatian or Dutch.

In 2008, the population was almost half male (46.4%) and a bit more than half female (53.6%). Most people living in Oberhünigen were born in Switzerland. About 35.8% were born right in Oberhünigen. Another 45.6% were born in the same canton (Bern).
