Obetz History: How the City Began
Obetz started in 1838 as "Obetz Junction." It was named after an early settler, Charles Obetz. Back then, it was a busy stop for stagecoaches, which were like old-time buses.
This area became a very important place for trade and travel. Nearby towns like Groveport and Canal Winchester were part of the Ohio and Erie Canal system, which helped move goods by boat. Obetz was officially made a village in 1928.

Obetz Sports: Home of Athletes!
Obetz has been home to several sports teams and training centers.
Professional Sports Teams
- The Ohio Aviators rugby team used to play in Obetz.
- The Ohio Machine lacrosse team also played their home games at Fortress Obetz. They even won the Major League Lacrosse National Championship in 2017!
Training Facilities
Obetz is home to the EAS Training Center. This used to be where the Columbus Crew Soccer Club trained. It has locker rooms, meeting rooms, classrooms, and many practice fields. It's used by the professional team and younger academy players.
Obetz Education: Learning and Schools
Most students in Obetz go to schools in the Hamilton Local School District. A smaller number attend schools in the Groveport Madison School District. Both districts have a long history, going back to the mid-1800s.
Hamilton Local School District
This district includes Hamilton Township High School, Hamilton Middle School, Hamilton Intermediate School, Hamilton Elementary School, and Hamilton Preschool. More than 3,300 students attend these schools.
In 2015, Hamilton Township High School received a huge honor: it was named a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Secretary of Education. This award recognizes schools for being excellent. The district has also been named one of central Ohio's Top Workplaces for several years!
Groveport Madison School District
This district has one high school (Groveport Madison High School), three middle schools, and six elementary schools. It serves about 5,811 students across an area of about 42 square miles.
Obetz Parks and Recreation: Fun for Everyone!
Obetz has seven public parks, covering 136 acres! These parks offer many activities like fishing, archery, basketball, and bocce ball. They help make Obetz a great place to live.
Memorial Park
Memorial Park is a large park where the Obetz Athletic Club is located. It's also where the city's big annual Zucchinifest is held. The Ohio Aviators rugby team used to play their games here.
Veterans Park
This is a smaller park with a gazebo and benches. It has special memorials to honor Obetz veterans.
Community Center Park
This park is next to the Community Center. It has a tennis court, two basketball courts, playground equipment, and picnic tables with grills. There's also a small walking path.
Dixon Quarry
Dixon Quarry has a six-acre lake where you can go fishing! It also has an archery range, walking paths, and fitness trails. A bike path connects it to a larger trail system that goes all over central Ohio. The pond is stocked with many types of fish, like Largemouth Bass and Rainbow Trout.
Obetz Athletic Club
The Obetz Athletic Club is a big building with 16,000 square feet. It's located in Memorial Park. Inside, you'll find equipment for strength training and cardio. They even have two golf simulators!
Community Center and Conference Center
The Community Center has two large rooms, a small gym, and a lounge. It's a great place for community events. Right next to it is the new Obetz Conference Center, which can hold up to 250 people for bigger events.
Obetz Zucchinifest: A Big Party!
Obetz is famous for its Zucchinifest! This is a four-day festival held in Memorial Park. It used to be before Labor Day weekend, but now it's held during Labor Day weekend.
The festival has rides, lots of food, games, and live entertainment like concerts. There's also a beer garden for adults, a pageant, a parade, and a car and motorcycle show. The best part? Admission, parking, and concerts are all free!
Fortress Obetz: A New Stadium
Fortress Obetz is a large stadium with 6,500 seats. It was built on the site of the old Columbus Motor Speedway. Obetz bought the Speedway in 2016 and turned it into a community space.
This $15 million project was finished in 2017. Fortress Obetz hosts concerts, farmers' markets, trade shows, sports events, and festivals. The Ohio Machine lacrosse team played their home games here. The first event at the stadium was a lacrosse game on May 6, 2017.
