Ocean Reef is a coastal suburb located in northern Perth, Western Australia. It is part of the City of Joondalup. The name "Ocean Reef" was chosen by developers in the 1970s. It comes from a line of reefs that you can see a few kilometres offshore.

This name became official in 1974. Before that, the area was called Beaumaris. You can still find the name Beaumaris on a shopping centre and a primary school in the suburb today.

The suburb is split into two main parts by Hodges Drive. The area south of Hodges Drive is sometimes called 'old' Ocean Reef. There is a boat harbour right in the middle, at the western end of Hodges Drive. You'll also find two shopping centres: Beaumaris Shopping Centre in the north and Ocean Reef Shopping Centre in the south. Recent road improvements have made it easier to drive along the coast. This new road connects Hodges Drive to Shenton Avenue, extending the beautiful 'Sunset Coast' drive into the nearby suburb of Iluka.

Discover Ocean Reef's Coastal Features

Ocean Reef is known for its beautiful coastline and the Ocean Reef Boat Harbour. This harbour is about 8 kilometres north of the popular Hillarys Boat Harbour. It provides a public ramp where people can launch their boats. It also has a small area for fishing boats.

Future Plans for Ocean Reef Marina

The City of Joondalup has big plans for the Ocean Reef Boat Harbour. They want to create a new, world-class marina. This marina would be for recreational boating, homes, and tourism. The proposed plan, called the Ocean Reef Marina, focuses on being very environmentally friendly. It also aims to offer great facilities for the community.

In 2009, the City of Joondalup asked local residents what they thought about these plans. A large number of people responded to the survey. Out of nearly 12,000 people, most were very supportive. About 94% wanted the site developed, and 95.6% liked the proposed design. The local council has decided to move forward with preparing the necessary plans for government approval.

Explore the Coastal Path and Dunes

Along the coast, there's a lovely dune walkway and cycle path. This path stretches from the south to the north of Ocean Reef. It gives you access to several small beaches, perfect for relaxing. You'll also find picnic areas and rest stops along the way. Many paths lead from the coast directly into the suburb. A wide protected dune area separates the houses from the Indian Ocean. In some places, these dunes are about 400 metres wide.
