What's in a Name? The Story of Beldon

Have you ever wondered how places get their names? For Beldon, there are two interesting ideas!

  • One idea is that Beldon was named after A.W. Beldon. He was an early landowner and surveyor in the Wanneroo area around 1838.
  • Another idea is that the suburb got its name from Arthur and Florence Beldon. They were teachers who ran the Wanneroo School for many years, from 1945 to 1965.

Beldon's Past: A Quick Look at History

Long before European settlers arrived, the land where Beldon now stands was home to the Nyoongar Aboriginal people. They lived here for an amazing 40,000 years! They would travel across the area, moving between the inland and the coast at different times of the year.

When plans for the suburb were made in 1974, it was first suggested to call it Albert Grove. This name was after Sir Albert V Jennings, who owned a company involved in developing the area. However, there was already a suburb called Albert Cove, so a new name was needed.

The name Beldon was officially approved on August 25, 1975. Houses and land packages were first advertised in 1977. For a few years, until 1979, the area was sometimes known as Mullaloo-Beldon or Ocean Reef-Beldon. The very first show homes were built along Craigie Drive. The area was marketed to attract young families, couples, and people moving to Australia.
