The ocelot gecko (also known as Paroedura picta) is a small lizard from Madagascar. It lives on the forest floor, often hiding in leaf litter. People also like to keep these geckos as pets. You might hear them called by other names too, like the Madagascar ground gecko or fat-headed gecko.
What Ocelot Geckos Look Like
Ocelot geckos are usually brown with black spots or markings. Some even have a white stripe down their back. When raised by people, they can come in many different colors, like orange or yellow!
These geckos are quite small. Most are about 10 to 15 centimeters (4 to 6 inches) long. Some well-cared-for males can grow up to 20 centimeters (8 inches). They have slim bodies and narrow heads. Their colors are often shades of brown, gray, and cream. Their spots look a bit like those on an ocelot, which is a wild cat.
They have big, round eyes with pupils that look like thin lines. They also have sticky pads on their toes. These pads help them climb and stick to surfaces. Even though they can climb a little, they mostly stay on the ground. If they get scared, they might quickly climb the side of a glass tank.
Ocelot Gecko Habits
Ocelot geckos are nocturnal, which means they are active at night. During the day, they hide in small cracks or under rocks. They come out to hunt for food when the sun goes down and before it rises.
They are insectivores, meaning they only eat insects. They love to munch on bugs!
Ocelot Geckos as Pets
Ocelot geckos can make good pets. They usually live for about six to ten years when cared for properly. However, they do not like to be held much. If they feel scared, they might even try to bite. It's best to watch them in their tank instead of handling them often.
