Marie Octavie Coudreau (born Renard; 1867–1938) was a brave French explorer and writer. She wrote several books about her adventures in French Guiana and northern Brazil. In 1899, the Brazilian states of Pará and Amazonas hired Marie Coudreau to explore and map the Amazon region. Her husband, Henri Coudreau, was also a famous French explorer and geographer.

Exploring the Amazon River

At the time, there was a disagreement between France and Brazil about their shared border. Marie's husband, Henri Coudreau, worked for the Brazilian states. His job was to map the rivers that flow into the Amazon and find useful resources for farmers and people who worked with forests. Henri Coudreau was asked to explore the Trombetas River shortly after he and Octavie got married.

Their first trip together in 1899 ended sadly. Henri Coudreau had already been sick and tired from many years spent in what he called the "green hell," meaning the very difficult and wild jungle. He suffered from malaria fever and passed away in Marie's arms on November 10, 1899. With help from his travel companions, Marie made a coffin from boat wood. She buried him on a hill overlooking Lake Tapagem.

After Henri Coudreau's death, Marie decided to continue his exploration work. She kept going for seven more years! She later finished the book Voyage au Trombetas, which her husband had started. This happened after his body was brought back to Angoulême in France.

"If I am an explorer – this word cannot be feminine – it is not for glory. Glory is too changing and blind. It is not because I love geography, though I think I should love it greatly when I do not. If I do exploration, it is to bring my husband's remains back to his elderly parents. It is so Henri Coudreau does not stay forever in a loved foreign land. It is also to finish the work he started five years ago. This work is useful because it helps make lands still unknown to many people, known." (Voyage au Cumina, 1900)

From 1899 to 1906, Marie Coudreau worked as an official explorer for the French government. This was a very unusual job for a woman at that time. She faced the same tough challenges that had eventually led to her husband's death. Despite this, she made important discoveries and greatly helped people learn more about the Amazon's tropical areas.

She passed away in Sonnac.
