Odo III (born 1166, died 1218) was an important ruler known as the Duke of Burgundy. He became duke in 1192 and ruled until 1218. Odo was the oldest son of Duke Hugh III and his first wife, Alice.
Life as Duke
Odo III had a different approach to ruling compared to his father. He chose to be a strong friend and helper to King Philip II of France. Odo supported King Philip in his wars against King John of England and the Holy Roman Emperor Otto IV of Germany.
Odo was known for being calm and steady. He fought bravely in the Battle of Bouvines against Emperor Otto IV. Stories from that time say that Odo had two horses shot out from under him during the battle, but he kept fighting.
Odo also played a big part in the Albigensian Crusade. This was a religious war against a group called the Cathars, who had different beliefs from the main Catholic Church. When King Philip II decided not to get involved, Odo stepped up. With help from local bishops and his own loyal followers, he led a military campaign in 1209 against the Cathars' strongholds. Before going on this crusade, Odo gave the castle of Ile-d'Ouche and the village of Crimolois to the Knights Templar. This was to help them protect the Catholic faith.
Marriages and Children
Odo III was married twice.
His first marriage was in 1194 to Theresa of Portugal. She was the daughter of Afonso I of Portugal and Matilda of Savoy. However, their marriage ended in 1195, and they did not have any children together.
In 1199, Odo married Alice of Vergy. She was the daughter of Hugh, Seigneur de Vergy. Odo and Alice had several children:
- Joan (1200–1223), who married Raoul II of Lusignan.
- Alice (1204–1266), who married Robert I, Count of Clermont.
- Hugh IV (1213–1272), who became the next Duke of Burgundy after Odo.
- Beatrice (born 1216), who married Humbert III of Thoire.
