Offerton is a lively suburb located in Stockport, Greater Manchester, England. A suburb is like a neighborhood that's part of a bigger town or city. Long ago, Offerton was part of Cheshire county. Today, it includes areas like Bosden Farm, Foggbrook, and the Offerton Estate.

Offerton is home to many people. In 2011, about 13,720 people lived here. The area also has schools. For example, Offerton School closed in 2012. Now, the building is used by Castle Hill High School.

History of Offerton

Offerton has changed how it is governed over the years. This means how its local services and rules are managed.

Early Local Government

In 1875, Offerton was a "civil parish" in Cheshire. A civil parish is a small local area with its own council. Offerton was one of eight such parishes that joined the Stockport Rural Sanitary District. A "sanitary district" was a group of areas that worked together on public health, like keeping things clean.

Later, in 1894, this sanitary district became the Stockport Rural District. This was a new way to manage local government in the countryside.

Becoming Part of Stockport

In 1900, Offerton became part of the Hazel Grove and Bramhall urban district. An "urban district" was a local government area for towns and more built-up places.

These local government areas changed again in 1974. This happened because of the Local Government Act 1972. Under this act, the Hazel Grove and Bramhall district was ended. Offerton then became part of Greater Manchester. It joined other areas to form the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport. A "Metropolitan Borough" is a type of local government area found in large city regions. This is how Offerton is governed today.
