Ohioville is a small town, called a borough, located in western Beaver County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. It's part of the bigger Pittsburgh metropolitan area. In 2020, about 3,349 people lived here.

A Look Back at Ohioville's History

Ohioville started as Ohio Township in 1805. It was created from parts of another area called South Beaver Township. Long ago, many Native American tribes lived in this region. These included groups from the Archaic and Woodland periods. Before William Penn came to Pennsylvania, the Iroquois tribe used this area for hunting.

Ohio Township was once home to a ferry. A man named Thomas Smith from Maryland ran this ferry. It helped people cross the Ohio River. Near the ferry, there was a special spring. It had "bituminous oil," which is a type of natural oil. This oil was very important for the area's growth. There were also some old Indian pictographs (rock paintings) in the area, but they are now underwater.

Early Communities in Ohioville

Blackhawk village was a small community near the South Beaver Township line. It got its first post office after 1837. Even earlier, the New Salem United Presbyterian Church was started around 1798. This was about the same time as the Mount Pleasant Church in Big Beaver.

In 1811, the Four Mile United Presbyterian Church was founded. It was located on Tuscarawas Road. This road got its name from an old Tuscarora hunting trail. The church was first called Four Mile Square Church.

Over time, Ohio Township lost some of its land. In 1816, some land went to Brighton Township. More land was lost when Glasgow borough (1854), Industry Township (1856), and Midland borough (1906) were created. Finally, in 1960, Ohio Township officially became Ohioville Borough.
