The Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame is a special place in Muskogee, Oklahoma. It celebrates amazing musicians from Oklahoma who have made a big impact on music. Every year, new artists are added to the Hall of Fame in a special ceremony and concert held in Muskogee. Since it started in 1997, more than 100 musicians and groups have been honored here. The Hall of Fame also has a museum to teach everyone about Oklahoma's musical heroes.
History
The idea for the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame began in 1996. Two lawmakers from Muskogee, State Senator Benn Robinson and State Representative Barbara Staggs, worked together. They passed a special resolution that said Muskogee would be the home of the Hall of Fame. Another lawmaker, State Representative Bill Settle, helped get money from the state government to support the project.
In 1997, a group called Friends of Oklahoma Music was formed. This group organized the very first Hall of Fame induction ceremony and concert. It took place at the Muskogee Civic Center. Two years later, in 1999, the Governor of Oklahoma, Frank Keating, created a special board. This board was in charge of raising money and finding a place to build the museum. The goal was to honor Oklahoma's rich music history.
In 2003, the Friends of Oklahoma Music group signed a long-term agreement with the City of Muskogee. They began fixing up an old train depot called The Frisco Freight Depot. In October 2003, the Hall of Fame offices moved into the depot. This building was chosen to become the future Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame Museum. In 2004, the group changed its name to Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame Foundation. Then, in 2005, it became known by its current name, Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame & Museum.
