The Story of Old Dutch

The company started way back in 1934. It was first called Old Dutch Products Co. and was founded by a person named Carl J. Marx. He picked the name "Old Dutch" because people thought of the Dutch as being very clean and making good quality things.

The first Old Dutch factory was in St. Paul, Minnesota. Then, in 1937, they moved to Minneapolis. Later, in 1968, they moved again to Roseville, Minnesota. That's where their main office is still located today!

In 1954, Old Dutch opened a new factory in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. This factory was built to make chips especially for the Canadian market. The main office for their Canadian business is still in Winnipeg.

Today, the part of the company in the United States is called Old Dutch Foods, Inc.. The part in Canada is called Old Dutch Foods, Ltd.. In 2004, they celebrated their 70th birthday with special TV commercials.

In 2006, Old Dutch Foods bought another snack company called Humpty Dumpty Snack Foods. This deal cost about C$26.7 million (Canadian dollars). Now, Humpty Dumpty snacks are mostly sold in the New England states and parts of Canada like Ontario and Quebec.

Tasty Snacks and Products

Old Dutch is most famous for its many kinds of potato chips. You can buy them in regular bags. Sometimes, they come in "twin packs" (boxes with two bags inside) or "triple packs" (with three bags).

In the United States, you can find many potato chip flavors. These include the classic Regular, Sour Cream & Onion, Cheddar & Sour Cream, Dill Pickle, Bar•B•Q, Onion & Garlic, and Smokey Bacon. They also make Ripples Chips in Original, French, Mesquite Bar•B•Q, and Loaded Spud flavors.

In Canada, some popular flavors like Mexican Chili and Au Gratin were brought back in 2008. Old Dutch also makes Dutch Crunch chips, which are cooked in a special way to make them extra crunchy.

Besides chips, Old Dutch makes other snacks too. These include cheese puffs, Puffcorn (which are puffed corn twists), and Restaurante Style Tortilla Chips. They also sell Arriba flavored tortillas, pretzels, dips, and salsas. You can also find Dutch Gourmet thick-cut ripple chips, Ridgies flavored ripple chips, baked chips, sunflower seeds, pork rinds, and beef jerky.

Many of the same snacks are sold in both Canada and the United States. However, some flavors are mainly found in Canada, like Ketchup, All Dressed, and Salt & Vinegar chips. (These flavors are sold in New England under the Humpty Dumpty brand.) In 2005, Old Dutch also started selling its own brand of beef jerky.
