Old North Dayton is a neighborhood located northeast of downtown Dayton, Ohio. It sits between two important rivers, the Great Miami and the Mad rivers. Key streets that run through the area include Troy, Brandt, Valley, Stanley, Leo, and Chapel Streets.

A Look at Old North Dayton's Past

Who Lived Here First?

The first people to settle in this area were German immigrants. Back then, the neighborhood had different names like 'Texas' or 'Parma'.

A Mix of Cultures

As the 20th century began, many new immigrants came to Old North Dayton. These families were mostly from central Europe, including Poles, Hungarians, Lithuanians, and more Germans. They came to work and brought their rich cultures with them. This is why you can find many different Roman Catholic churches, fun cultural festivals, and social clubs in the area. There's even a special restaurant called the Amber Rose that serves central European food! More recently, in the 2010s, many Turkish immigrants have also made Old North Dayton their home.

Important Buildings

Old North Dayton has several interesting places to visit. The Amber Rose restaurant is a local favorite. There are also historic churches like Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church (originally German), St. Adalbert's Catholic Church (Polish, now closed), St. Stephen's Catholic Church (Hungarian, also closed), and Holy Cross Catholic Church (Lithuanian). You can also find the historic Kossuth Colony here.

The main campus of the Dayton Children's Hospital is located in Old North Dayton. This hospital helps many kids in the area. Right next to it is the Ronald McDonald House Charities Dayton, which provides a place for families to stay while their children are in the hospital.

Parks and Green Spaces

The neighborhood is home to Stuart Patterson Park. This park used to be called Walters Grove. It was renamed to honor Stuart Patterson, who was the nephew of a famous local businessman, John H. Patterson. Stuart Patterson sadly died in a plane crash nearby. Inside Stuart Patterson Park, you'll find the Francis Fitzsimmons Senior Citizens Center.

Getting Around Old North Dayton

It's easy to get around Old North Dayton and to other nearby towns. State Route 201 (using Valley and Brandt Streets) and State Route 202 (Troy Street) connect the neighborhood to downtown Dayton, Riverside, and Huber Heights. Also, Ohio State Route 4 gives you access to major highways like Interstate 75, Interstate 70, U.S. Route 35, and Interstate 675.

The 2019 Tornado

On May 27, 2019, Old North Dayton faced a very difficult time. An EF4 tornado, which was the strongest in a series of storms that hit the greater Miami Valley, caused a lot of damage. Many homes and businesses were completely destroyed. Some parts of the neighborhood lost electricity and water for several days after the storm.
