Early Life and Music Beginnings
After finishing her O-Level exams at Damai Secondary School in Singapore, Olivia moved to Japan. There, she continued her studies and started her career as a solo artist. When she was just 15 years old, Olivia won a singing contest. She then signed with a Japanese music company called S2S Pte Ltd. People even compared her to the famous Japanese singer Seiko Matsuda. Olivia has said that music artists like Nat King Cole and Nina Simone have influenced her singing style.
Olivia's Music Journey
When Olivia was 15, she helped form a J-pop group called Mirai in Singapore. She was one of three Singaporean girls in the group. Their very first song, "Open Up Your Mind," was used as a theme song for the Japanese anime show Gensoumaden Saiyuki.
Olivia released her first solo album, A Girl Meets Bossa Nova, when she was 19. This album included her own versions of classic songs, like Frank Sinatra's hits. One popular song was "Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars" by Antônio Carlos Jobim. The album featured a mix of jazz and pop songs.
On November 17, 2004, Olivia had the honor of singing Majulah Singapura, Singapore's national anthem. She sang it at a big soccer match between Japan and Singapore. This was during the 2006 FIFA World Cup Asian qualifying rounds.
In 2009, Olivia joined a Taiwanese record company called HIM Music. She became very popular in Singapore after singing the theme song for a drama series called The Little Nyonya. This show was about the Peranakan culture. Her first album with HIM Music, simply titled Olivia, came out on March 5, 2010. In 2011, she recorded a duet called "最後一眼" (Just One Look). She sang this song with Aaron Yan, who was a member of the band Fahrenheit.
Acting and Other Achievements
In 2011, Olivia also appeared in a movie called It's a Great, Great World (大世界). She played a young fashion photographer named Ah Min. In the movie, Ah Min finds old photos taken by her late grandmother. She takes these photos to her grandmother's old friend, Ah Meng. Ah Meng then tells four different stories based on the pictures. Each story is from a different time period.
In 2012, Olivia was chosen as the Music Ambassador for the Global Chinese Music Awards. She was the second Singaporean artist to receive this special role. In the same year, she also sang the theme song for Singapore's National Day Parade. The song was called "Love at First Light".
