About Omar Naber's Early Life
Omar Naber was born in Ljubljana, which was then part of Yugoslavia. His father, Samir Naber, is from Jordan and works as a dentist. His mother, Alenka Naber, is Slovenian and teaches piano. Omar grew up in a Christian family, like his parents.
He studied to become a dental technician in high school. He even worked for six months in that field. However, he soon realized that music was his true passion. Omar started getting involved in music when he was 16 years old. He joined a choir called Veter (which means "Wind") in Ljubljana. The band Green Day was a big inspiration for him to become a musician.
Omar Naber's Music Career
Starting Out in Music (1999–2001)
In 1999, Omar Naber started his own rock band. Even though some band members have changed over the years, the band is still active today. They have played more than 800 concerts. They have also performed at many charity events to help others.
In 2001, Omar came in second place at a local singing competition. It was called 'Kdo bo osvojil Triglav' (meaning "Who will conquer Triglav"). After this, he signed a contract with Nika Records, a music label in Slovenia. He also sang backup for other Slovenian artists. He helped with their studio recordings and live shows.
Winning a Talent Show (2004)
In late 2004, Omar Naber won a TV show called Bitka talentov. This was the Slovenian version of a "Battle of the Talents" competition. Winning this show made him famous across the country. That same year, he recorded his first song and music video. The song was called "Vse kar si želiš" (meaning "Anything you want"). This song was later released on his first album.
First Time at Eurovision (2005)
Because he won Bitka talentov, Omar got to compete in EMA 2005. This is the show where Slovenia chooses its song for Eurovision. He won EMA 2005 and became Slovenia's representative.
He went to the Eurovision Song Contest 2005 with his song "Stop". He wrote this song himself, along with Urša Vlašič. Even though he performed well, he did not make it to the final show. He finished in 12th place in the semi-final.
His first album, also called Omar, came out in 2005. In 2006, he toured around Slovenia and other countries. After that, he went back to the studio with his band, Kareem. They recorded his second album, which was released in 2007 and named Kareem.
New Music and Eurovision Again (2014–2017)
In 2014, Omar released his third album in Slovenia, called Na glavo. A few months later, he released an English version of the album in England, named No Helmet.
In 2017, he won EMA 2017 again. This meant he would represent Slovenia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 for a second time. His song was "On My Way". Just like in 2005, he did not make it to the final show. He finished 17th in the first semi-final.
