How Highway 417 Was Built
Building a big highway like this takes a lot of time and effort! Construction on Highway 417 began in May 1969. It was built in different sections over many years. The very last part of the highway, near Arnprior, was finally finished in 2012. This means it took over 40 years to complete the entire road!
Where Does Highway 417 Go?
Highway 417 stretches for about 187 kilometers (which is about 116 miles). It connects many towns and cities in eastern Ontario.
East End: Connecting to Quebec
The eastern end of Highway 417 is right at the border between Ontario and Quebec. Here, it becomes Quebec Autoroute 40, which continues towards Montreal. This connection is super important for travel and trade between the two provinces.
West End: Becoming Highway 17
On its western side, Highway 417 ends near the town of Renfrew. At this point, it changes into Ontario Highway 17. Highway 17 then continues further west, connecting to more communities in northern Ontario.
