History of Orchard Hills
Orchard Hills got its name from the many fruit orchards that grew on its rolling hills around the early 1900s.
In 1806, Governor Philip Gidley King gave 600 acres (about 2.4 square kilometres) of land here to Mary Putland. She was the daughter of the new governor, William Bligh. Mary named her new property Frogmore.
Around 1830, Reverend Samuel Marsden built a large house called Mamre. This two-storey house was built in the old Colonial Georgian style using sandstone. Mamre is now a special place listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register. You can visit it for guided tours and events.
Next to the Frogmore Estate was the York Estate, owned by the York family. In the late 1880s, this land was divided up and sold. Most of it was bought to grow fruit and grapes. By the early 1900s, a small farming community had grown in the area. A small village also started to develop.
The Mount Hope Methodist Church was built in 1904. The York Estate Public School opened in 1910. Before this, the area had many different names like Frogmore, York, and Mount Hope. In October 1910, people held a meeting at the new school to pick one name. They chose Orchard Hills.
About Orchard Hills
Orchard Hills is right in the middle of the City of Penrith. A large water pipe from Sydney Water forms its southern border. To the east, you'll find the suburbs of St Clair and Erskine Park. Kingswood and Claremont Meadows are to the north. To the west are Glenmore Park, South Penrith, and the countryside areas of Wallacia and Mulgoa.
Orchard Hills still feels like a countryside area. It has rolling hills and beautiful views. You can see many orchards and grapevines. Some new houses have been built recently. This suburb shows how the City of Penrith wants to mix city life with peaceful rural areas.
