The Dutch Fleet: Commanders and Ships

The Dutch fleet had 107 ships. They carried 4,864 guns and had 21,613 men. Most of these ships (81) were warships from five different Dutch Admiralties. An Admiralty was like a naval department for a region. There were also 11 hired merchant ships from the Dutch East India Company (VOC). The fleet also included 9 frigates and 6 three-mast yachts.

The Dutch fleet was divided into squadrons, but they did not use the "line-ahead" fighting style yet. This means their ships didn't always stay in a straight line during battle.

Each Dutch squadron had a main commander and their flagship.
