A simple, energy-rich meal: potatoes, quark with linseed oil, Blutwurst (blood sausage), and Leberwurst (liver sausage).

The food in the Ore Mountains region has a long history. For hundreds of years, the way people cooked was shaped by their jobs. Most people worked in mining, crafts, or forestry. This meant their meals were often simple, using basic ingredients. People had to be creative to make tasty food with what they had!

However, rich families living in big houses had very different meals. They could afford fancy ingredients. For example, the Schönberg family, who were close to the court in Dresden, showed off their wealth with amazing feasts. Their homes were on the important "Salt Road," which was a trade route. This allowed them to get exciting spices and cooking ideas from far away lands.

History of Ore Mountain Food

Starting in the 12th century, many people moved to the Ore Mountains. This happened during "silver rushes" (called berggeschrey), when new silver was found. These new settlers came from different places, bringing their own cooking styles with them. This mix of cultures influenced the local food.

The 1700s were especially important for the region's food. Around 1771–1772, there was a time of great hunger in the mountains. To help, people were encouraged to grow potatoes. Even churches gave "tuber sermons" (Knollenpredigten) to teach people about potatoes.

Potatoes grew well in the mountain's poor soil and cold weather. Because of this, potatoes became a main food for people in the Ore Mountains. Many different ways to cook potatoes were invented, and these dishes are still popular today.
