Oregon Penutian is a name given to a group of languages that some experts once thought were related. These languages were spoken by different groups of Native Americans in what is now western Oregon and parts of western Washington, USA. Imagine a big language family tree; Oregon Penutian was like a proposed branch on that tree.
These languages were spoken in many areas of Oregon, including along the Columbia River, in the Willamette Valley, near the Oregon Coast, and in the valleys of the Umpqua and Rogue rivers. These areas are now some of the most populated parts of Oregon.

Why is it "Hypothetical"?
The term "hypothetical" means that experts are not sure if these languages are truly related in the way they first thought. Over time, as linguists (people who study languages) learn more, they sometimes change how they group languages.
More recent studies of the larger Penutian language group, like those by Scott DeLancey, no longer include Oregon Penutian as a single family. However, they still recognize the Coast Oregon Penutian languages as a related group. This shows how the study of language families can change as new information is discovered.
