Orio is a charming fishing town located in the Gipuzkoa province. This area is part of the Basque Autonomous Community in northern Spain. The main part of the town sits right on the Oria River. It's about one mile from where the river meets the big Bay of Biscay. In 2016, Orio was home to about 5,901 people.
For a long time, Orio was all about the sea and fishing. But now, tourism is becoming more popular and important. New houses for visitors have been built on land that used to be marshy. One of the most famous sports in Orio is rowing regattas. These boat races are very popular along the Basque and Cantabric coasts. Orio's team is easy to spot because they wear yellow!
You can get to Orio by train using Euskotren Trena's coastal line. There's also the N-634 road and the A-8 motorway, which opened in 2010.
Orio holds a special festival every five years. It celebrates the last time a North Atlantic right whale was caught by Basque whalers in 1901. This event was so important that it even inspired a folk poem. A famous singer, Benito Lertxundi, helped make this poem well-known. You can listen to it here: improvised poem.
Exploring Orio's Geography
Orio is located on the beautiful coast of Gipuzkoa. It's part of the Beterri region. The town is right next to the last flat area of the Oria River. This is just before the river flows into the wide Bay of Biscay.
How Big is Orio?
The entire area of Orio is about 9.81 square kilometers. The Oria River forms the southern and western edges of the town. It separates Orio from a nearby town called Aia. Even though the river divides the two towns, Orio has traditionally controlled the river itself. This means both sides of the Oria River near the town are under Orio's care.
Orio's Coastline and Mountains
To the north, Orio meets the Cantabrian Sea. Most of Orio's coastline is made up of tall, dramatic cliffs. There's only one flat beach area, called Antilla beach. It's located on the right side of the river. The northeastern part of Orio has a mountain called Talaimendi. Its highest point is Kukuarri, which is 362 meters tall.
