Orion Peak is a tall mountain in northern British Columbia, Canada. It stands about 2,254-metre (7,395-foot) high. This peak is part of the Bulkley Ranges, which are a group of mountains within the larger Interior Mountains range.
Where is Orion Peak?
Orion Peak is found inside Seven Sisters Provincial Park and Protected Area. This park is a protected natural space. The mountain is about 7 km (4 mi) southeast of a small town called Cedarvale. It also sits north of the Seven Sisters Peaks and the Seven Sisters Glacier.
Mountain Geography
The mountain's location means it gets a lot of water. Rain and melting ice from the nearby glacier flow down the mountain. This water then goes into smaller streams and rivers. These streams eventually join the large Skeena River.
Orion Peak's Climate
Orion Peak has a subarctic climate. This means it has very cold and snowy winters. The summers are usually mild, not too hot. Temperatures can drop below −20 °C. With strong winds, it can feel even colder, sometimes below −30 °C.
How Orion Peak Got Its Name
The name "Orion Peak" became official on August 25, 1977. The Geographical Names Board of Canada approved it. The name was first mentioned in a climbing guide from 1964. This guide, called "Climbers Guide to the Coastal Ranges of British Columbia", was written by Dick Culbert.
