The Hazelton Mountains are a fascinating group of mountain ranges found in the beautiful northwestern part of British Columbia, Canada. They sit just inland from the huge Coast Mountains. These mountains stretch from the town of Hazelton all the way south to the Nechako Reservoir.

Geographers often consider the Hazelton Mountains to be part of a larger group called the Interior Mountains. However, people living nearby sometimes see them as part of the Coast Mountains. They are bordered by the Kitimat Ranges to the west and the southern Skeena Mountains to the east. To the north, across the Nass River, are the Boundary Ranges.

Exploring the Hazelton Mountains

The Hazelton Mountains are officially defined by British Columbia's geographic names office. They reach from the Nass River in the north to the Nechako Plateau in the south. They are also located between the Coast Mountains and the Bulkley River.

To the southeast of these mountains, you'll find the Nechako Plateau. This area includes the Quanchus Range. The Quanchus Range is located on a piece of land between Ootsa and Eutsuk Lake, which are part of the Nechako Reservoir. Some people even consider the Quanchus Range to be part of the Hazelton Mountains.

Mountain Ranges Inside

The Hazelton Mountains are made up of several smaller mountain ranges. These ranges are divided by major rivers like the Skeena River.

North of the Skeena River

  • Nass Ranges: These mountains are located between the Kitsumkalum River to the west and the Kitwanga River to the east.
    • The Nass Ranges include the Tseax Cone. This is an active volcano that caused a major natural disaster long ago.
  • Kispiox Range: You'll find this range east of the Kitwanga River, stretching towards the Skeena River.

South of the Skeena River

These ranges are found south of the Skeena River and west of the Bulkley River.

  • Bulkley Ranges: This is where you'll find the highest point in the entire Hazelton Mountains.
    • The highest summit is Seven Sisters Peaks, which stands at about 2,786 meters (9,140 feet) tall. It is located southwest of Kitwanga.
    • Other ranges within the Bulkley Ranges include:
      • Bornite Range
      • Howson Range: Its highest point is Howson Peak, reaching about 2,759 meters (9,052 feet).
      • O.K. Range
      • Rocher Déboulé Range
