Osama El-Baz (born July 6, 1931 – died September 14, 2013) was an important Egyptian diplomat. He was a top advisor to former President Hosni Mubarak.
Osama El-Baz's Important Career
Osama El-Baz studied at Cairo University. He then spent six years studying in the United States. There, he earned a master's degree from Harvard Law School.
After his studies, Mr. El-Baz joined Egypt's foreign service. This meant he worked for his country to build good relationships with other nations. In 1977, he became a "chef de cabinet" with the rank of ambassador. This is a very important role, like being a chief of staff for a top official.
When President Anwar El Sadat decided to visit Jerusalem for peace talks with Israel, Mr. El-Baz offered to help plan these important discussions. He even went to Israel to work out the details for the President's visit. He worked alongside Boutros Boutros-Ghali, who later became the head of the United Nations.
After President Sadat passed away in 1981, the new president, Hosni Mubarak, chose Mr. El-Baz as his advisor. He led the Presidential Office for Political Affairs. This office helped the president make important decisions about how Egypt dealt with other countries.
Mr. El-Baz was seen as a very powerful and influential person behind the scenes. He was often more important than many government ministers, especially in matters of foreign policy. He often handled important missions that were too sensitive for the official Foreign Minister to undertake.
Towards the end of President Mubarak's time in office, Mr. El-Baz became less involved in major decisions. He was even seen during the large protests in Tahrir Square in January 2011. These protests were part of the "Arab Spring" movement.
Osama El-Baz was the father of Egyptian businessman Basil El-Baz. He was also the brother of the famous NASA geologist Farouk El-Baz.
